The municipality Villa of Salerno is the “garden” of the city. It was designed in 1874 at the entrance of the city going down from Vietri sul Mare. There is the famous Fountain of Tullio.
Casalbore Architect designed it around the famous fountain called “Don Tullio” (or of Esculapio)realized in 1790 to give refreshment to travelers coming into the city from the Amalfi Coast and Naples, and installed at the expense of a certain Don Tullio from which it took its name.
Located in front of the Theatre Verdi, has a lush botanical garden with many rare plants of the Mediterranean; in particular, are to be appointed at least papyrus and banana trees that grow naturally thanks to the mild climate.
This garden-park currently has several statues, including that of Charles Pisacane excel in marble, and that of Giovanni Nicotera in bronze. The latter, because of its material, was removed during the last war to make bullets: the current statue is a copy of the fifties, made using the same mold as the original. The park also features a pond. Another famous statue is a bust of Salerno Minister Giovanni Cuomo.
The fountain “Don Tullio” 1790 was damaged in the earthquake of 1980, and then deprived of the cherub because of a theft of vandalism; has recently been restored. The renovated Town Park is now fenced off, with new flooring, in-room music systems for acoustic and video surveillance.
In recent years, since 2006, the municipal Villa is decorated for Christmas and New Year with Luci d’artista, attracting dozens of thousands of tourists. The “garden” of Salerno is practically connected and continued on the sea front promenade Trieste.
